Blaxploitation Cinema
Curated by inshanemagic
Blaxploitation is a genre of films from the early to mid-1970s that featured Black actors and was originally aimed at Black urban audiences. The term itself is a portmanteau of "black" and "exploitation," and the films, which were often low-to-mid-budget, typically featured anti-authoritarian Black protagonists in urban settings. While sometimes criticized for reinforcing stereotypes like pimps and drug dealers, these movies also featured empowerment themes and provided opportunities for Black actors in roles they couldn't get in mainstream Hollywood at the time.
